The idea for front yard bbq's loosely came out of the City of Neighborhoods campaign in Tacoma, WA. City of Neighborhoods is an initiative to encourage people in the Tacoma and South Puget Sound region to take ownership of their neighborhoods in collaboration with their neighbors. Citizens are encouraged to engage in placemaking and think imaginatively about how to connect with their neighbors. City of Neighborhoods also advocates for a more holistic approach to neighborhood planning - one that includes places to live, work, shop, eat, play and gather in walking distance. In 2012 the primary City of Neighborhoods planners also started National Potluck Week in conjunction with some national partners.
